I just licensed and bought my car, now its junk?

chistine r asked:

Ok here is the info. I bought a 1993 Chevy Cavilier last Tuesday, and went and got the tags on it the same day. I coudlnt really test drive it to far, because the seller had expried tags on it. Well 2 days ago the Turning signals went completely out. Than I noticed i nthe trunk there was another old turning signal switch in there, so they have already replaced it. I was told this car was a good work car, well now i cant even drive it with no turning signals. The car smells like bad gas, and needs a muffler. I plan'd on replacing it anyhow. But also thet car needs an allignment, I did not now this til I drove it o nthe interstate. Also on the Interstate I started hearing a tick in the motor. Anyhow is there anyway to get any of my money back? I was wondering if I could get any og the tags money back to. It was $144 plus 25 on taxes. If all else fails I plan on selling it to a dang junk yard. I am so tired of it already, I bought this for my teenager to learn to drive in. I am so Mad!

Your first mistake was buying a Cavalier. That car is 16 yrs old was junk the day it was made. You cannot get your money back on a used car b/c they are always sold as is. You should have run a Carfax had a certified mechanic inspect it. You cannot get your money back for the tags/title fees from the state. What's done is done. Yeah I'd be mad too, at myself.

well I'm not an expert, but the turning signals could be just replacing a fuse which is both simple and inexpensive. If I were you, I'd take the car to an Auto Zone/O'Reilly or other car parts chain store, they usually have a diagnostic machine and they'll hook it up to your car and tell you what's wrong with it. (free of charge)
I'd do that first before sinking too much money into it.
Good Luck

you won't get money back from the tags. If you bought as is you are stuck. Take the car to a trusted mechanic to determine what exactly needs to be fixed and if it is worth it. Use hand signals to drive it there. Then the next time you buy a used car take it to a local mechanic to look it over before purchasing it, expired tags or not.

you bought it.
you didn't have it checked out before buying
it had a bad muffler or exhaust pipe when you bought it and you should have been able to hear and smell this problem with or without a test drive.
Your the one at fault here.
now you can fix it or junk it's your decision

I'd be mad too. All you can do now is make the best out a bad situation. Talk to a few honest mechanics and get their opinions. This same type of thing happened to me, I trusted that the person selling me my car would be honest, but that did not happen. I ended up putting a fair amount of money into the lemon car to make it work for awhile. I of course ended up getting another car later with the help of a good mechanic.
