Repair my car Or junk it and buy new?
allistaken1 asked:
I have a 93' Plymouth Acclaim with around 120K Miles, 1 past owner before me.
I have a 93' Plymouth Acclaim with around 120K Miles, 1 past owner before me.
It needs a new transmission and coolant leak fix, which I was quoted it would cost around $1500 (minimum) total to fix everything. The engine runs very well, and its in relatively good condition besides the needed repairs.
I'm a college student, and must be conservative with my money, but I do need a working car. So should I get the repairs done, or scrap the car and buy a used car? In my market, the range for a used car would be $3000 – $5000 – but I really was hoping not to spend this kind of money right now. I bought the car just $750, 5 years ago.
If you give an opinion, please tell my why you think this. Thanks!

plymouths are not very reliable cars after 100k. i say you should buy a new car, well not a new one but a used one rather than keep putting your money into a piece of junk!

If you are going to make the commitment to spend twice the amount you spent to buy the car on maintaining it, you need to ask yourself how long you will expect this repair to last, and that you are committed to keep this car.
you might want to look VERY long term since car this is now 15 years old – if you can manage to keep it running and in good shape for another 10 years, it might actually be a good investment.
Just look at the previously unloved Plymouth Duster. In the mid-90's, when they were about 15 years old, you could have picked one up for $500. Very same car, now, 10 years later they are going for a pretty penny – some up to $10k

I would say to keep it. Chances are if you buy a used car [I guess this is what your talking about seeing that your on a budget] theres usually going to be a salesperson ready to get rid of the car so they probably won't mention the cars faults, at least you know whats your current cars problem is. If you junk your car now then buy another there could be something serious with it, and there you would be **** out of luck. If it was me I would just stick with your current car.

You should purchase a new used car. Here's why. Chrysler products from the year you have are notorious for transmission troubles. You have received your money's worth from this car as you stated you paid 750.00 for it and have owned it for 5yrs. As you are a college student can you afford to dump more money in for repairs if something else major goes wrong after you make this repair? What you replace this with is also very important as being on a budget you don't need more repair bills. My advice is to purchase a Honda Accord or a Civic. These cars are fuel efficient and known for their longevity. You should be able to pick one up from a private owner in your 3-5k dollar range. Have a mechanic check the car and also run a Carfax check on the car so you can surface any accidents or other potential problems. With good research you can buy a quality used car in your price range and have it service you well for the remainder of your time in school. You also have an advantage buying a used car because you can research the past history of problems or lack of them before you choose a model to purchase. Edmunds. com is a good website for research and so is MSN Autos and their reliability website. Also try selling this car for parts and applying that money to your next purchase you may be able to get between 200 and 500 dollars for it for parts which means you will have spent between 250 and 500 dollars for the car over 5 yrs you can't beat that. It's time to cut your losses and move on to the next one!

I say sell it and buy a more recent and up to date car. You are in school and about to spend a lot of money on repairs, what if something else goes wrong? Emissions and motor wear. I would look around and find another car for 1k and under, this way you are spending about the same as your repairs and you will also have the money for junking your old one. 5 years for $750.00 you got your moneys worth.
