This question is simply to subjective. If you get a thousand replies to your question, you will have a thousand different opinions. I can only offer my opinion – I have always bought Toyota trucks. I was an auto tech when I bought my first one in 1985. I drove every kind of truck that came to my shop for a year before choosing, and I have not been without a Toyota since. American cars had lower reliability than Japanese cars. But there cheaper and live up to exspectations . European cars cost more. Get what you can afford. If I could I would buy a Toyota 4-runner.

Go with Japanese or Korean (Hyundai). Toyotas are actually now built in the USA. They are well-designed, well-made, and represent good value for the dollar. My answer is Japanese cars. They are the most reliable cars and offer the best value for money. You can go for years at times with a Toyota without repairs being required. On the fuel economy front too, Japanese cars beat their American and German counterparts.

At one time, around the 70s, American cars were the pits. The factories had the mind set that If WE build it , THEY will buy it. Unfortunately, by the time they began to wake up and look behind them, from their IVORY TOWER, foreign automobiles had already taken 30% of the American market. For the first time they woke up to the harsh reality of COMPETITION, got off their smug ***** and begin to make decent cars.

I would say, at this time, the American, Japanese and German cars are all about neck and neck. I wouldn't be afraid to buy from either of the companies. I think the choice, will depend on just what you want and the job it will have to do.

Japanese……. are very reliable, TOYOTA's are mean't to be almost indestructable…… though Japanese cars tend to feel like they were designed by an accountant, and lack the character of American European rivals.

American SUV's…… well, they've got the looks and a bit of character, but rather fuel thirsty……. and word has it that JEEP off-roaders aren't as reliable as they look.

German…… well, the BMW X3 is said to be the only off-road car not capable of going off-road….. and thus got a bit of a kicking when it was reviewed on TOP GEAR….. I believe the exact description was along the lines of don't buy it unless your so certifiably insane you wake up in the morning thinking that you're an Onion. lol
Not sure about the BMW X5…… but of course normal BMW road cars are THE best.

The Porsche CAYENNE…… from what I gather is awesome to drive, but got slated on TOP GEAR for being damn ugly.

The Mercedes ML320….. supposed to be a VAST improvement over the previous model, which came bottom of TOP GEAR's reliability customer satisfaction survey…… and most of the rest of their range haven't been up to scratch for the past few years, so Mercedes have had to cut their profit margins by a couple of billion $$$'s to get things back up to scratch.

Generally, if you want a reliable regular car (not an SUV), go for either:
Subaru, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, or a Ford Focus.
